What is an idle tycoon game? A shop that keeps running after you close the app

An idle tycoon game is a management game where you grow a shop or a mine, with systems that keep the money coming in while you are not touching anything. There are five core pieces: automatic income, prices that rise as you buy, automation such as managers, offline earnings that build up while the app is closed, and prestige, where you reset in exchange for a permanent bonus. How big the offline earnings are depends on the game. In our Internet Cafe Tycoon, only 30 minutes' worth builds up at the start, and research stretches that to 3 hours.
In one line
An idle game is one that moves forward through automation, and tycoon is the management theme of growing a shop or a factory. An idle tycoon game puts the two together: you build up a business such as a cafe, a mine, a bank or a PC cafe and watch the numbers climb on their own.
Wikipedia's Incremental game entry describes the family as games where resources build up little by little and grow through repeated actions or automation. It says the ones that stress constant input are also called clicker games, while the ones centered on automation, where progress continues with little input, are called idle games.
Clicker, idle, tycoon: what's the difference?
A clicker is a game where you keep tapping the screen to push the number up. An idle game hands the tapping to a person or a machine and then waits. Tycoon says what you grow: a shop, a mine or a bank, some place that earns money.
So one game can be all three. You tap for the first few minutes, and once you hire staff you switch to watching. This is also why "idle games" and "idle tycoon games" show up as separate searches. The first names a way of progressing, and the second names the theme as well.
Where did it start?
Wikipedia gives Progress Quest in 2002 as the first example of an idle RPG. The genre spread to a wide audience after Cookie Clicker, made in 2013 by French developer Julien Thiennot (Orteil).
On mobile, the games that put the genre on the map include AdVenture Capitalist (Hyper Hippo) in 2014 and Idle Miner Tycoon (from Fluffy Fairy Games, the former name of Kolibri Games) in 2016. On Google Play (US store) on October 21, 2026, Idle Miner Tycoon shows 100M+ installs, and AdVenture Capitalist and Egg, Inc. show 10M+ each.
Five systems that make money pile up
Open almost any idle tycoon game and you will find the same pieces. Knowing their names lets you read the structure of a game you have never seen.
| System | What it does | Real example |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic income | The shop or mine earns money by itself | Idle Miner Tycoon has you grow a mine, and AdVenture Capitalist has you buy and grow businesses one by one |
| Rising prices | The more of something you buy, the more the next one costs | In Cookie Clicker, each building you buy costs 15% more than the last |
| Automation | Managers or staff take over what you did by hand | In AdVenture Capitalist, hiring a manager makes an investment run automatically |
| Offline earnings | Money builds up while the app is closed | Idle Miner Tycoon's store text says "Even offline!" and AdVenture Capitalist's says "while you eat, drink, or sleep" |
| Prestige | Start over in exchange for a permanent bonus | AdVenture Capitalist gives an angel investor bonus when you reset |
Prices keep rising, so why keep playing?
Idle games almost never show a failure. Your money always goes up, and the next thing to buy is right in front of you. Prices climb, but income grows with them, so a new goal opens every few minutes. When the numbers stall, a research unlock or a new facility opens up at that moment and gets them moving again.
It also matters that this is not a game you open once and hold onto for hours. The rhythm is to step away, come back, collect what built up, spend it on one more step and close the app again. That suits short, frequent sessions.

How much really builds up while it's closed?
Store descriptions only say that money builds up offline, so you cannot tell how much. Our game keeps its values in code, so we can write them down.
In Internet Cafe Tycoon, the time that builds up while the app is closed is at most 30 minutes at the start. Converted to in-game days that is 15 days, but the calculation cuts it to 10% efficiency, so what you actually receive is about one and a half in-game days of sales. A day lasts 2 minutes, which is how 30 minutes becomes 15 days.
If you learn Night Hours (from stage 2), Open 24 Hours (from stage 4) and Self-Checkout (from stage 6) in research, the time that builds up grows to 1, 2 and 3 hours. Efficiency stays at 10%. We set it low on purpose, so that opening the shop and playing it yourself earns more.
When you reopen the app, a window for what you earned overnight comes up first. If you watch an ad at settlement, you get that day's earnings doubled, and the game moves on if you skip it.
Our three games, side by side
Dumb Game Lab's tycoons share one frame: a cat boss inherits a single shop and grows it. Only the subject changes. Internet Cafe Tycoon starts with 6 seats and grows through 6 stages from a back alley to the whole country. You open applications to hire part-timers, and they run the shop. The screen below is the staff list.
Korean Spa Tycoon has you design the route guests walk from the shoe locker to the sleeping room, with 7 stages and 30 facility types. Chichi's Idle Bakery Tycoon moves the same frame into a bakery, with cafe tables and a button for baking new bread.

How to pick an idle tycoon game
If you are new, check just these three things. Store descriptions often don't say, so it is more accurate to open the game yourself and test it once more in airplane mode.
- Does it run without internet? Offline earnings and offline play are different things. AdVenture Capitalist's description says it needs a connection.
- Where do ads and purchases attach? Check on day one whether they appear only when you choose to watch, like the double reward at settlement, or whether they block your progress.
- Does it have an ending? With prestige you can keep going round and round, and without it the game ends when the stages end. Which is better is a matter of taste.
Where our game falls short
Internet Cafe Tycoon is new, so Google Play installs are still low and there are no ratings yet. Offline earnings are small on purpose, 30 minutes at 10% efficiency at the start, so if you expect to wake up to a huge pile, you may be let down.
It has 6 stages from back alley to the whole country, so it has an end. It is a short management game for your phone, a different kind from the big idle games you run for months.
