Short answer A baby's kneecaps are cartilage and start turning into bone around age three. The number of bones actually goes down as you grow.

A crawling baby's knees. Actually, there's no hard bone in there yet.

Babies are born with kneecaps made of soft cartilage. Cartilage barely shows up on X-rays, so the spot where the kneecap goes looks empty.

YauSo their knees are squishy?

Cartilage is the soft but tough tissue that makes up your ears and the tip of your nose.

Around age three, bone starts forming inside the cartilage. Over several years, it turns into hard bone.

270 → 206number of bones in a newborn and in an adult

A baby has about 270 bones. As it grows, several of them fuse into one, so an adult ends up with about 206.

YauYou get fewer bones as you grow up?
